City-wide driverless trains (Denmark)
Creating infrastructure to run a world-class metro system for the city of Copenhagen.
Connect Copenhagen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with an innovative design - focused transportation system
Hitachi and its subsidiary Ansaldo STS has joined forces with Copenhagen and Metro company to create a seamless transport system, which fits into the city's current design and infrastructure.
In 2002, Ansaldo STS in cooperation with Metroselskabet were contracted to design, manufacture and build an efficient rail network to Copenhagen. The collaboration resulted in a safe, fast and comfortable metro system, which makes it easy for the people of Copenhagen to get from A to B in minutes. The driverless system was introduced by contemporary advanced technology, and it was a leading initiative in the transport sector.
Based on the success of this project, Hitachi and Ansaldo STS are now at the next stage, ie enlargement - City Circle - which will open in 2019. The line will have 16 km of double track and 17 additional stations. Similar to the current network it will be in operation 24 hours a day with 98% service coverage.
Metro Company, the company that owns the Copenhagen Metro, has also undertaken the construction of the City Circle. The daily operation and maintenance of the Copenhagen Metro is outsourced to Metro Service.
